or would you still want him back. Forget about money. We all know it's going to be a lot and probably not a hometown discount. My question is, do you want him back? No qualifiers, no ifs.

string the bum up by his thumbs is what I say, then offer him the league minimum contract without a no-trade clause and tell him he's gotta start in double A and earn it all again...

Yes he should be back.
His bat was a huge lift to our line-up helping us to a postseason berth we may not have gotten without him.
One thing I keep thinking about is Albert and Matt were never really hot at the same time, I wanna see what those two could do back-to-back in a real groove.
Gonna remember that play for a long time but it was one play. Franklin still could've gotten someone out and he didn't. The team could've come out and played Game 3 like they had a pair, they didn't.

Was Jackie Smith a bum just because he dropped that touchdown pass as a Cowboy?
No.
So one bad play (granted it was at a bad time, but still, stuff happens) does not change my opinion of a guy.

Yes I want him back. He did not lose that game. It is still a one run lead two out and the bottom half of the order coming up. Had TLR brought in Smoltz, different story.

You were just dying to use the term "crotch botch" in a post weren't you? No. It hasn't...and if one error ruined Holliday for someone they are an utter moron. People may have other reasons for not wanting us to re-sign him and I can respect a lot of those reasons as they are quite respectable...but b/c of one play is absurd.
Also, everyone keeps talking about us having to compete with the Yankees, Giants, Boston et al to retain him, but that is not the case. Yes...in theory we have to compete with what they may offer him if he hits the free agent market, but right now the ball is in our court...he hasn't hit the open market. He has a "perceived value" created by his agent. make the dude the most competitive offer you can and move on.

It's a little silly to pose that question and ask that all "ifs" and "qualifiers" be removed. Yes I'd like to see him back, but not if it prevents the team from addressing other issues.

I don't know about Holliday, but the phrase "crotch botch" is golden.

No,
Mistakes happen. I personally think he is going to sign with us. I think that if anything the botched catch helped our chances more. I think he is a gamer. I think he signs here.

It's not the fact that he made a crucial mistake at a horrible time, costing us any chance we had of competing in the series. It's not his lack of aggressiveness, during crucial at bats during the Dodger series, failing to lift the bat off his shoulder. Human mistakes are forgiveable.
It's the fact, that it seemingly has not hurt him in the least, with his contract negotiations. He will still reap his lavish rewards, despite his postseason futility. All the while, we invested our most promising young hitter in our system, for what obviously was a 3 month failed rental.
It's because he probably IS LESS INCLINDED TO RETURN HERE, BECAUSE OF THE CROTCH BOTCH--WHEN HE AND HE ALONE IS SOLELY TO BLAME FOR THE GAFFE.
I doubt JFK if given a second chance, would return to Dallas. I doubt Buckner would want to return to Shea. I doubt George Foreman would choose to return to Zaire, Africa. Hence, I doubt Holiday will want to comeback to the Cardinals, where he experienced his most embarassing moment as an athlete.
Plus, Boras as his agent, does nothing to improve his level of likeability.
If he resigns here, I will happily accept him back, with a standing ovation. And if he doesn't, I will boo him, just as loudly as we did Barry Bonds. It certainly won't be the Cardinal fans to blame, for this relationship becoming estranged.
