Post subject: Why would anyone be mad at Matt Holliday or the Cardinals?

Why do people think Holliday should take less money to play in St. Louis? He should get as much as possible and play where he wants to play. I hope the Cardinals make an attempt to resign him 5 yr $100 mil? If he leaves, he leaves, life will go on. Holliday owes this town zero. Plus, he will never live up to the contract he is about to sign, no matter where he ends up, very few players can. Ask Cubs fans what they think of Soriano three years later. I give the Cards credit for trying to win and until proved different let's see what they do this off season.

Do you have an oversized keyboard that you type on?
I find your posts to be exceptionally coherent and typo-free for having such big hands.
That's a bit off-topic though...
To answer you question... i don't people would be mad, per say, prolly a lil disappointed though considering we don't really have a clean-up hitter.

I don't have any problem with Holliday for leaving. I would do the same thing. You get 10 years to make your living as an MLB-er, and I don't see anything wrong with following the money.
That said, I will be a little disappointed with the Cardinals if they can't resign him. That is because they traded their best hitting prospect for a late-season rental. People say Wallace didn't have a position here, but if his bat is as good as projected, you find a way to fit him into the lineup or get comparable value for him.
I don't think the Cardinals should have traded Wallace for Holliday unless they (1) had a very good idea of what Holliday's Market Value would be, and (2) had the budget and will to go after him.
I just don't see that 2 1/2 months of Holliday equals our top prospect.

The more i think about it, the more i think we should just way over pay Holiday for 2-3 years instead of semi-overpaying for like 6 years. Instead of 6 years at like 126 mill (21 mil a year) why not 3 years at like 23mil? Those will be Albert's prime years anyway...if we can't win a W.S in the next 3 years than fuggit

Holliday will not take anything less than 6 years. This is his one shot for the giant payday. It's set up perfectly for him as he is clearly the number one free agent.

All due respect, it's like he's gotta get this big payday or he'll go broke. It's not like he's currently making 25 k a year. Whether he takes a "discounted" offer or the top one that's out there, he will be wildly rich beyond anything he could ever have imagined 10 years ago. Sure, it's his career and he can get all he wants, it's his choice. But, let's no go too far with this "gotta make all he can" he will make enough money, discount deal or no, to take care of several generations of Hollidays. And, if he doesn't, then it would be his mismanagement of money. Sorry, but I find that whole "maximize his FA" stuff very laughable.

He won't sign for less than 6-7 years - his productivity will start to fall after age 35 or so he won't be worth nearly as much when the 3 yr. contract expires.

I want Holliday to go to the Yankees for as much money as possible. I want a $300 million payroll for them next year!

Again, I have to laugh. Whether it's 6 years for 96 million, 5 years for 100 mill, 6 years for 150 million.....whatever it is, he's still cashed in big time with enough money to do anything he wants the rest of his life, his kids to never have to work, their kids, and on down the line.
Just so you guys know, Matt Holliday currently doesn't work at Burger King in the off-season to supplement his non-Free Agency income.
Again, it's all up to him and he can do whatever he wants. But, let's not pretend that these guys going for the top dollar is anything more than just a male ego thing to outdo someone else. It has nothing to do with financial security, because they already have that and will have it whether they take the low, middle or highest deal.

When you get a Boras client, expect what you get. That being said, the Cards either had great interest in re-signing him and thought they could or they realized maybe they had no position for Wallace, took a gamble on Holliday and now will get some draft picks. To which I say come on Mets with those higher picks!

JMO but I think the Cards thought Holliday would fall in love playing in St. Louis and would really, really want to re-sign. I also think the Cards are going to make a solid offer to Holliday. But, it just won't be nearly enough. Look at poor Milwaukee with Sabathia last winter. I believe they offered 5 yrs at 100 mill to keep him. The Yanks blew that straight to the toilet. This winter, maybe it's not the Yanks, but someone is going to decide they cannot live without Matt Holliday and blow the Cards offer down the drain.

Well stated. I'm amazed by those who live in the fantasy of retaining Holliday. Why do you think he hired Boras for his agent, in order to negotiate from weakness? You hire Boras for one reason, to get every last dollar and amenity available on the table. Wake up, there will be no hometown discount for the Cardinals, or any other club for that matter.
Holliday will get paid handsomely, and Boras will collect his fat percentage too. And the only way he remains a Cardinal, is if for some strange reason the deep pockets such as the Yankees, RedSox, Dodgers pass on him, which is highly unlikely.
