This class is less than impressive...

I have narrowed down the 3 positions that the Cards will most likely be looking into (not including the bullpen)

Leftfield

Johnny Damon (36)
Vladimir Guerrero (34)
Bobby Abreu (36)
Jermaine Dye (36)
Xavier Nady (31)
Carl Crawford (28) *$10MM club option with a $1.25MM buyout

This one is tough because Holliday and Bay are most likely going to be too high priced. Most of the other options are up there pretty high in age, or are coming off injuries. I think Xavier Nady makes the most sense, he is a career .280 AVG 20 HR 80 RBI guy but he is coming off of an injury.

Staring Pitchers

Doug Davis (34)
John Lackey (31)
Cliff Lee (31) *$8MM club option with a $1MM buyout
Joel Pineiro (31)
Jarrod Washburn (35)
Brandon Webb (31) *$8.5MM club option with a $2MM buyout
Randy Wolf (33)

Will the Cards resign Pineiro? My gut says no, its the usual Duncan fixer uper then good by, bring in another. Lackey will probably want too much, along with Lee. A guy like Doug Davis could fit in nicely behind Waino and Carp, maybe take a look at Randy Wolf and get a lefty in the rotation.

Third Base

Adrian Beltre (31)
Mark DeRosa (35)
Chone Figgins (32)

Freese will get a look at 3rd but that's no gurantee. Figgins brings a lot of speed but gives us one more powerless bat in the lineup, which won't help much with the loss of Holliday. Beltre is a no in my book, much too inconsistent. Do the Cards bring back DeRo to play 3rd?

My take is that the Cards sign someone like Nady who wont cost a lot but has a consistent past. Re-sign DeRosa to play third, and possibly left field incase Nady doesn't workout. Then sign Davis/Wolf for the rotation.

Now the bullpen is another story...

Thoughts?

That's the million dollar question, or more accurately, 100 million dollar question (Holliday's potential contract #).

I would think that all but 2 openings will be filled in-house, unless I'm mistaken on contract status. LF and 4th or 5th starter.

Freese gets shot at 3B. I assume Garcia for a spot in rotation, Mather and/or Craig as the 4th/5th OF/INF, maybe Descalso at a INF spot, resign LaRue at back-up C, maybe Sanchez or Salas or Parise or Boggs for final spot in bullpen.

I guess it depends on priorities and preferences. If they stay in-house, in theory, they can afford one of the higher priced FA's. No matter, that LF spot NEEDS attention.

I think that going in house for the 4th and 5th starters would be a HUGE mistake. You can get by with the 5th starter but there is nobody in AAA that has shown enough consistency to prove they can last a full season in the bigs.

If Lohse doesn't return to form then after Carp and Waino it would be like throwing Wellemeyer out there for 3 starts. Yikes.

Gotta sign a reliable starter.

I agree. I would think they give Garcia a shot as 5th starter. They need a dependable 4th starter (take a risk with Smoltz?). Never know how Lohse will respond next year. But, as most of this year showed, the offense needs a big bat in LF to protect Pujols....just my humble opinion.

Boras as at it with Damon, or I'd say give him a two year deal as a stop-gap. Maybe we could get Nady or Dye for relatively cheap. Nady didn't even really play this year.

I like Nady, before this year from 2005-2008 he averaged:
.280 AVG, 19 HR, 70 RBI

We could probably get him for pretty cheap, he is signed for $6.5 mil this year and basically has missed the whole season. It would be a roll of the dice though.

Crawford fills a speed need and hits for good power. Imagine that!

It would be nice but Tampa will pick up his option for next year and then trade him at the deadline.

Best risk could be Eric Bedard if he'd take a one year deal.

Carps-Waino-Bedard-Lohse-Garcia

Average four+ runs/game and you'd win 90+
games. Wink

If the price is right, I would re-sign DeRosa. He can be used in LF and also the infield if the other infield options don't work out.

Vlad intrigues me too...at the right price.

Brandon Webb anyone?

It's a shoulder injury so it's risky, but if he came back without any problems could you imagine

1. Carpenter
2. Wainwright
3. Webb

Shocked
