[Lead post and title of thread edited for chronological continuity]

The Forest Park Lady Highlanders Cinderella-like 2009 season ended on Friday, November 6, with a loss to undefeated and nationally-ranked Iowa Western Community College (#5 in the country entering District play). Iowa Western, the Region 11 champion, won the NJCAA District C Semifinals with a late goal in a 1-0 win over Region 16 champion Forest Park (Division I Junior College Soccer). Game story on the District C semifinal later in this thread.

This year "District" play in NJCAA Division I women's soccer brackets the top 20 junior college teams in the country into 8 "districts." A few of the NJCAA's 24 Regions did not qualify for "District" play. The remaining 20 Regional champs were set to square off on Nov. 6-7 to determine which eight remaining teams proceed to the NJCAA finals in Tyler, Texas on Nov. 19-22.

Defending National junior college champion Lewis & Clark Community College (Godfrey, IL), Region 24 champion and host of the 4-team District C tourney, won their semifinal earlier in the day by defeating the Region 2 (Oklahoma) champion.

The Lady Highlanders ended their season at 10-11-1, but remarkably qualified for the tough District C semis by winning their previous six games, including three NJCAA playoff games to capture the Region 16 tourney.

SLCC-Forest Park reached the Regional final by beating MCC-Blue River 3-0 in a play-in game on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Lady Highlanders followed that with a 1-0 upset on October 31 over the Region's #1 ranked team, SLCC-Meramec. Then Forest Park upset MCC-Maple Woods (Kansas City), which was 15-2-1 before Forest Park topped them on Nov. 1, 2-0.

The win over MCC-Blue River featured two goals by freshman Kayla Clark, and a goal and an assist by freshman Carrie Stone.

Goal 1, 10/24/09, Kayla Clark:

Goal 2, 10/24/09, Carrie Stone:

The Lady Highlanders third goal of the game started with a unique play from sophomore co-captain Kathryn Eldridge. Standing at midfield and with her back to the Blue River goal, Eldridge redirected a wild clearing pass by kicking the ball over her head toward Carrie Stone, who was racing up left wing. Stone dribbled past the last Blue Ridge defender and in on goalie Andrea Falco. As Falco moved to meet Stone, the Highlander's forward shoveled a perfect past to the right side of the net to a wide open Kayla Clark. Clark roofed the pass into the top of the net for the final goal of the game.

3rd Goal, 10/24/09, Kayla Clark:

Goalie Sheila Self not only earned the shutout over Blue River, she also established herself as the NJCAA saves leader among Division I junior college goaltenders.

In Saturday's win over SLCC-Meramec, Carrie Stone continued her scoring streak by picking up a penalty shot goal midway through the second half.

Defender Danielle Schuler had a particularly strong game, breaking up a number of first half rushes and essentially preventing Meramec from getting any scoring chances or shots on goal.

Meramec's leading scorer, Casey Caldwell (10 goals in the regular season) suffered an injury to her right knee early in the first half and did not return. Caldwell and Forest Park defender Danielle Schuler raced for a loose ball in the right corner deep in Forest Park territory when Caldwell crumpled to the turf at St. Charles West High School.

"I tried to turn and my foot slipped," said Caldwell after the game. "When that happened, I hyper-extended my knee."

Meramec goalie Katie Jolliff made a spectacular save midway though the first half to temporarily keep the game scoreless. Forest Park's Kathryn Eldridge lofted a pass from the left corner into the slot. Forward Nika Ponder (a 2008-09 NJCAA Academic All-American) re-directed the pass with a sharp header earmarked just inside of the right post. Joliff made a lateral leap and caught the belt-high shot with her fingertips.

Meramec could not capitalize on Joliff's big play, as Forest Park continued their tight defensive game and also controlled most of the flow throughout the evening, maintaining possession with crisp, short passes. In the absence of Caldwell, Meramec couldn't manage a sustained attack.

Carrie Stone was awarded a penalty shot around the 24 minute mark of the second half when she made an aggressive play for a loose ball to the right of the Meramec goal crease and had a jump on the lone Magic defender. The Meramec player pulled Stone down, prompting the penalty shot.

Stone fired a low shot toward the left post. Meramec's Jolliff guessed in that direction and dove but the desperate attempt to stop Stone's shot deflected off Jolliff's right hand and into the net.

The win was the Lady Highlanders' fifth consecutive victory, a team record. Forest Park's win raised their season record to 9-10-1. Meramec had previously beaten Forest Park twice this season, on September 19 (3-2) and October 6 (1-0) but could not duplicate a third win over the Lady Highlanders. The loss ended Meramec's season at 7-5-0.

In the first semi-final game on Saturday night, #2 Regional seed MCC-Maple Woods defeated St. Charles Community College, 1-0, on a goal with 1:19 left in regulation time.

In between semi-final games, several Forest Park players were honored by being named to the first and second MCCAC All-Conference teams, and the All-Region 16 Team.

The Midwest Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) is composed of 9 member institutions, four of which participate in women's soccer: Lewis & Clark, Meramec, St. Charles and Forest Park.

Danielle Schuler (daughter of 1974-77 St. Louis University's star defender Frank Schuler) was named First Team All-Conference. Carrie Stone, Sheila Self, Kayla Clark and Kathryn Eldridge were named to the conference's second team.

Carrie Stone and Sheila Self were named first team All-Region. Danielle Schuler, Nika Ponder and Rachel Gay were named to Region 16's second team.

Region 16 is comprised of St. Charles Community College, two schools from Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City (Maple Woods and Blue River) plus two affiliates from St. Louis Community College (Meramec and Forest Park).

In addition, Carrie Stone was named the NJCAA Region 16 Co-Player of the Year.

NJCAA Academic All-Americans are announced in May 2010 at the end of the school year. In 2008-09, Forest Park's Nika Ponder was an Academic All-American.

Forest Park's Men's team lost 2-1 and were eliminated in their opening round in the NJCAA tournament on Tuesday, October 20, in Kansas City at MCC-Blue River. Alex Ponder scored Forest Park's lone goal, marking the fifth consecutive game Ponder had scored a goal.

In other Forest Park men's soccer news, sophomore goalkeeper Alex Cupp and freshman forward Alex Ponder were named 2nd Team All-Conference.

Forest Park 2, Maple Woods 0
Forest Park crowned Region 16 Champion

On Sunday afternoon, November 1, at the home field of Regional host St. Charles Community College, heavily favored MCC-Maple Woods entered the final 13-2-1. The Maple Woods squad featured freshman forward Mallory Craig (19 goals, 15 assists, 53 points), who entered the weekend ranked 25th in the nation among Division I junior college scorers. Also, Maple Woods goalie Kara Chavez had the 5th lowest goals against average in the nation in JUCO play, 0.33.

Playing in a 15-20 mph cross-field wind, Maple Woods controlled the ball through most of the afternoon but failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, largely due to the steady play of Highlanders' goalie Sheilah Self.

Midway through the first half, Maple Woods freshman midfielder Shelby Frisby took a long pass off a free kick and broke in free from the left wing. Self stopped Frisby's shot at point blank range to keep Maple Woods off the board.

Just as the two Regional semi-finals ended up as 1-0 scores, the Forest Park-Maple Woods defensive struggle seemed destined for a similar outcome, and perhaps overtime. Then with about 13:40 remaining in regulation time, forward Nika Ponder fed freshman Carrie Buckley with a midfield pass, and Buckley split the two Maple Woods defenders with a break toward the goal. Kara Chavez came out of the net to challenge Buckley, but Buckley fired a shot past Chavez and into the Maple Woods goal. It was only the 6th goal Maple Woods had allowed all season. It was also Buckley's first goal of the year.

Maple Woods went to an aggressive physical attack, but the Lady Highlanders held. A Forest Park counterattack induced a foul just beyond the Maple Woods goalie box with four minutes remaining. A that point late in the afternoon, Maple Woods was defending the goal opposite the western sky. As Maple Woods' goalie shielded her eyes against the setting sun, Forest Park's Carrie Stone lofted the free kick over the line of defenders and toward the goal. Netminder Kara Chavez seemed to lose the ball in the sun and didn't react until it was too late, as the ball deflected off Chavez' hands and into the net, just underneath the crossbar. Stone's goal put Forest Park ahead, 2-0.

The goal was Stone's 6th in the last six games.

Forest Park wound down the clock, thwarting Maple Woods' last desperate attempts to get back into the game.

After the game, Forest Park coach Juergen Huettner was named Region 16's "Coach of the Year."

Ir was the Forest Park women's first Regional championship, and the win also gave the Lady Highlanders a team record 10th victory.

As the Region 16 Champion, Forest Park has been assigned to "District C" of the NJCAA playoffs.

Lewis & Clark, the NJCAA Region 24 champion by virtue of a 1-0 win over Illinois Central College and a 3-0 win over Southwest Illinois College (SWIC), is 20-1-0 and still ranked #2 in the nation. They will be the #1 seed in District C and on Friday, November 6 at 11:00 a.m. Lewis & Clark will play the winner of Region 2 (Oklahoma-Arkansas region, and #4 seed in the District).

Following at 1:00 p.m. on Nov. 6, Forest Park will play the winner of the match between Region 11's Iowa Western Community College (16-0-1 through Saturday, Oct. 31) and Region 13's Dakota County Tech, from Rosemount, MN (15-5-0).

The District winners (top 8 teams) will then proceed to play the championship tourney in Tyler, Texas on November 19-22.

Lewis & Clark's team features the #3 scorer in the nation, Kaylee Neutzling, who officially has 43 goals and 6 assists (92 points). Several days ago Neutzling was named NJCAA Division I "Player of the Week" in honor of her game-winning goal over Illinois Central and her two goals in defeat of Southwest Illinois College, all in the Region 24 playoffs.

The Forest Park Lady Highlanders' Cinderella-like 2009 season ended on Friday, November 6, with a loss to undefeated and nationally-ranked Iowa Western Community College "Reivers." Iowa Western was the Region 11 champion and entered today's game ranked #5 in the country. The Reivers won the NJCAA Division I, District C Semifinals with a late goal in a 1-0 win over Region 16 champion Forest Park.

This year "District" play in NJCAA Division I women's soccer brackets the top 20 junior college teams in the country into 8 "districts." A few of the NJCAA's 24 Regions did have a qualifying team for "District" play. The remaining 20 Regional champs were set to square off on Nov. 6-7 to determine which eight remaining teams proceed to the NJCAA finals in Tyler, Texas on Nov. 19-22.

The defending National Junior College Division I Champion, Lewis & Clark Community College (Godfrey, IL), Region 24 champion and host of the 4-team District C tourney, won their semifinal earlier in the day by destroying Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa, the Region 2 champion, by a 8-1 score.

Lewis and Clark (21-1-0) will play Iowa Western (18-0-1) on Saturday, Nov. 7, to determine the District C champion.

Forest Park held high-scoring Iowa Western (115 goals in its previous 18 games) without a goal through 76 minutes. Then with 13:45 remaining in regulation time, Iowa Western forward Victoria Von Mende intercepted a goal kick near the edge of the Forest Park goal box. Von Mende made a quick move to elude a defender and blasted a shot past Highlanders' goalie Sheila Self. The goal ended Self's streak of 346 consecutive scoreless minutes in the nets, as she shut out the opposition in five of Forest Park's previous six games, all wins. Self robbed the Reivers on numerous chances earlier in the game, but Forest Park could not capitalize on their few scoring opportunities. Iowa Western has allowed only 13 goals all season.

Forest Park ended their season at 10-11-1, but remarkably was one of the last 20 teams remaining and qualified for the tough District C semis by winning their previous six games, including three playoff games to capture the Region 16 tourney. Forest Park's opponents this year had a collective record of 154-89-11, and four of the Highlanders' losses came against nationally-ranked teams which are in the NJCAA playoffs: Tyler Junior College (Texas), #7; Lewis & Clark, #2 (two games); and Iowa Western, #5.
