I have not had the chance to see the game yet, but based on the stat sheet it does not appear the Charest played yesterday. Is that correct? If not, was he sick? Hurt? Or was he just a victim of Ron Zook still stuck on Juice. I know they won, but it appears they were behind in the third quarter and Juice was doing nothing to move the ball toward the end of the 2nd quarter. Despite the win, the Illini will not be going to a bowl as much as I would love to see. Charest needs and deserves playing time.

Typical of Illinois fans, it seems... we effin' win, yet we find stupid little :!: to whine about...
we just beat michigan by 25, for the second year in a row, and you're unhappy Charest didn't play??

To answer your question, Charest was warming up to come in the game in the 3rd Q until that great play by Hawthorne and the goal line stop by the D resulted in the Illini having the ball about 6 inches from the goal line. That was not the right time to bring in the kid. Let your SR QB get you out of the endzone and then make a decision. Juice kept moving the ball so there was no reason to bring in Charest.

OK hockeyman79 we will see how the rest of the season goes if you haven't figured out that Juice is not the answer. I am very glad we won, especially against Michigan, but Zook is not the answer as our coach of the future with 5 years to be given the chance and Juice is not the answer at QB given four years to prove that. Charest deserves a little playing time. You can portray my questioning as "whining" all you want, but I don't care. Let's see what bowl we go to this year and then see how prepared we will be at QB going into next year. Maybe we can trade for a crafty veternan to lead the charge at QB.......oh wait this is college isn't it. Oh well.

Some of us understand the question and feel the same way you do.
Some of us are not expecting to run the table behind Juice. Guess that makes us bad fans? - NO. Just smart enough to know the team needs to start building now!
That doesn't mean I am not happy to beat Michigan by 25 when we stink. It's nice that even in two very disappointing years we have beat them by 25 each year.

I heard the same thing about Juice in 2007 as well... in fact if you listen to WDWS after any game, even after wins a majority of callers call in and say "while I'm happy we won, why didn't we etc etc etc"
It gets effin' old.
Juice has given his heart and soul to UI. Been punished more than any other QB in IL history I would think. He deserves to play much more than Charest. Charest deserves mop-up duty or a series or two when the offense is sluggish. If/when we lose game #7 and guarantee no bowl, I have no problem with a more even split on PT, perhaps even more for Charest to see if he can be the man next year
As the other guy said, Charest was warming up to come in until the situation dictated otherwise. Then the offense started clicking so why make the change? It would have more dumb to take Juice out in the second half after we got the momentum than it was when we put Juice back in after Charest moved us down the field last week once we got inside the 5....
we have 4 more games to get Charest some PT.
And yes, when you win by 25 but complain about a guy who some feel won't even start next year(hello nathan scheelhaase) not getting a series or two, it comes across as whining and just looking for something to (A female canine animal, especially a dog) about...
and I guess we should just bench all Seniors if lose game #7? Thanks Donsay, but you won't be back next year so we're benching you. Asamoah? I know you'll be in the NFL next year, but take a seat I wanna see how Graham Pocic holds up over a whole game...

Sorry that I hurt your feelings in my original post and I am happy that Juice didnn't fumble and only had one skipped pass to a wide open Benn this game. We'll just see how the rest of the season goes and then we'll see how Scheelhaase steps in next year. I have seen this movie before. If you are comfortable with zero experience at QB going into next year after 4 of 5 losing seasons, sit back and relax and don't get so "effin" worked up when someone poses a fair question of a senior QB who has had one OK game out of eight. I hope I am not having to relive the 2007 season for the next 25 years, but with some folks expectations being low it certainly is a strong posibility before we're back in the Rose Bowl again.

At this point and given this season I would tend to think there should be no sacred cows left on the Illinois roster senior or otherwise. Be honest Williams regardless of his past accomplishments hasn't carried the mail this year and it was a freshman who got the ball rolling Saturday not a veteran upperclassman. Hurt feelings has left the auditorium.

It's called moving forward with your program.
Juice Williams has basically been handed the QB job for the last several years and what has he done except get progressively WORSE on the field? What has he done for this team the last two years?
We aren't bowl bound and given our remaining schedule at best I doubt we win more than another game maybe two, so just playing out the string with Juice does nothing for the program. If Zook has a QB that he feels is the leading choice to be QB next season then he needs to start getting him some snaps. I'd rather he go through the initial learning pains and work out the stupid mistakes now when it means nothing versus the first few games of a new season.
It's simple logic.
And frankly the only reason he did well against Michigan is that he wasn't forced to have to really pass at all. Michigan couldn't or wouldn't tackle so Juice could run the ball. We haven't seen that for many games so I'm guessing it was a blip on the screen versus a harbinger of things to come for the last games of the season.

Williams hasn't carried the mail in basically 2 years...he's been handed the keys over and over and just repeatedly driven the zookmobile into the nearest ditch. He's a big boy and should understand that if you don't perform then your job is up for grabs.

Geez people, did anyone actually watch the game? The ABC announcer (Craig James I believe) nailed it on the head.
Charest was likely coming in in the 3rd quarter, but then the Hawthorne kid made the great hustle play, and the Illini D subsequently held Michigan out of the end zone.
Zook probably didn't want Charest's first action in the game to be with the ball on the half yard line. So Juice stayed in, and the team went 99 yards and scored a TD.
It's kind of hard to take a guy out after that, so Juice stayed in, and the Illini kept scoring. So Charest never got in.
My guess is Zook's thinking at that point was, "Let's just win a freaking game, I don't care how we do it or who does it."
I couldn't agree more. In fact, if anybody needs benched after the Michigan game it should be Duphrene (sp) at running back.
Let LeShoure start and get the bulk of the carries, with Ford coming in to back him up. No more 5 back rotation. Those two guys have proven they are capable of making plays.
There's five games left, if Juice plays poorly again, there will still be plenty of time to see Charest. I just want the Illini to move the ball and score and compete and win games. Whoever does that should be in, be they senior, freshman or whatever.
You don't "develop" in college football. That's what the offseason is for. You play whoever gives you the best chance to win right now.
Otherwise, you might was well give the money back to all the poor saps that paid the now exorbitant price for their tickets.
