Just from a layman's view it appears that defenses are starting to adjust and defend the spread better.

We are not seeing as many 50-70 point scoring from good spread teams as we had in 07 and 08.

I am curious as to what defenses are doing to shut down spread teams. There has to be a football coach on this board who can shed some light on the specifics for me.

Wasn't Pinkel quoted in the USA Today last week saying the exact same thing?

Alot of teams are now mixing up coverages more, dropping 8 and getting a good pass rush with 3 (this creates small windows to throw the ball), plus defenses are now recruiting better athletes to play defense in those conferences where there are the spread teams. Perfect example is Aldon Smith. He is a D-End and only weights 250. You would have never seen that 6 or 7 years ago. The reason why....he is quick and can get a good pass rush. When Mizzou drops 8 you have 3 quick guys up front who are going to put the pressure on the QB. Just a few reasons the spread is not putting up as big as numbers as in the past. Just like the defenses, the spread will evolve also.

The ability to defend spread teams depends solely (IMO) on having a front four that's good enough to get pressure on the QB without having to bring a lot of pressure from other places.

Once you have that, if you have some pretty decent athletes at LB and in the secondary that can make open field tackles, you have a good chance at slowing them down and winning the game.

Only if the offense is sub-par.

Ask USC. Formerly fourth in the nation in defense. Gave up 613 yards (almost 300 combined to the QB) saturday to a spread option offense.

Few teams can get an effective rush with three or even four linemen. And, even fewer teams can put their corners on islands.
