To me, the best movie, top to bottom: Directing, acting, music, setting, lighting, writing, all the other -ing's you can mix in there, is Goodfellas. It's not my favorite, probably somewhere in my top-15, but I can't think of another movie in which EVERYTHING came together as well.

I will second Shawshank.

Horror - The Shining

Comedy - Airplane! (I will probably get Exclamation for this, but I love that movie.)

Im sorry but the shining was not scary at all... i finally got to watching it a couple weeks ago and just really dont understand its appeal.

paranormal activity was 100x scarier

Horror- The Hitcher ( new or old, both great )

Comedy- Stripes, Forest Gump, Caddyshack, The Jerk, Breakfast Club, Liar-Liar, Dumb and Dumber

Yes! Now that Hitcher (original)... THATS a scary movie. I've recently seen the new version and it had abysmal reviews. The original is a must see!

Shocked it took 7 threads before The Third man & El lawwrence of arabia was mentioned.
Wow do i feel sorry for the young posters that think 70's - 2000 movies are tops when i know they haven't watched B & w films of the pre 60's.

I was going to list Raiders of the Lost Ark but someone else recently mentioned it. Some others that I don't remember seeing:

Chinatown
The Sting
In the Heat of the Night
Patton
The Wild Bunch
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Toy Story

The only black and white movie I like it the Wizard of Oz and that was only b&w for a small fraction of the movie! Laughing

I really only like new comedies and scary movies... Saw Paranormal Activity the other night and I was pretty darned scared there at the end, mostly because I thought it was a true story. Wouldn't recommend Saw VI though.

My favorite scary movies of all-time are the Sixth Sense, The Hitcher, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle,I still can't re-watch Scream to this day... I had years of nightmares.

So sad so many have never seen the best movies - pre 1970.

The "best" movie is not necessarily "my favorite" movie.

Best movies (I've seen) - not any order:
Casablanca
The Searchers
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Singin' In the Rain
Ben Hur
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The 10 Commandments
Gone With the Wind
Stalag 17
(There's probably more I'm missing)
Best overall movie (story, music, depth, etc.) would probably be The Searchers (though the acting was weak at a point or two)

My favorites: (not in order)
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Star Wars Empire Strikes Back
Singin' In the Rain
Stalag 17
The Searchers
The Godfather I and II
Its a Wonderful Life

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
If they would pay me what they are paying those guys to make me stop robbing banks, I'd stop robbing banks. Who are those guys?

Slapshot
Sand Pebbles w/ Steve Mcqueen
Once Upon a Time in America
My Cousin Vinney
The Dirty Dozen (the original)
As a Kid, Old Yeller

WOW. Just WOW!

Someone asks for Best movie ever, and we get Happy Gilmore, Caddyshack, etc.?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but is this board filled with 6th graders?

I echo the votes for Godfather I, GodfatherII, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Three CLASSIC films, expertly written, acted, directed.....GREAT films.

(I mean, they're not "Stripes", but .....)

So TL, are you tee'd off yet?
