Don't forget he was the stage hand in Boogie Nights and the ex-child star in Along Came Polly.

He forever changed my vocabulary when he used the word "shart" in Along Came Polly. A truly talented individual. Laughing

Hoffman is named for his uncle Phil, who lives in St. Louis and with whom the lad spent a few summer vacations. The St. Louis Hoffmans had an Oscar party, with red carpet, the year their boy won the Academy Award for "Capote." (But I still think Heath Ledger was equally good in "Brokeback Mountain").

Saw the movie tonight - its a hoot! Loved all the characters. Rooted for the Count when he played chicken with Gavin, but laughed loudest at Rhys Davis as Angus in the "What I've Never Done" game. ("Who hasn't?") Kenneth Branaugh's character was thoroughly despicable as was the Twatt - wasn't he one of the English Naval Officers in "Pirates of the Caribbean"? Amazing soundtrack. This movie is a lot of fun.

Yes, P S Hoffman is one of our greatest actors. I lived in Germany for a year in the early 70's and listened to several Pirate radio stations, Radio North Sea being the one, I assume, that the movie is based on. There was also Radio Luxembourg. It was either one of them or Armed Forces Radio to hear talk in English. Of course even the German language stations played music sung in English, all the American and British top hits. I want to see the movie, if for no other reason than just the memories it will stir.

Good characters. Very unique actor.

He's quite the anomaly: A plain-looking guy who gets top billing in so many quality films. A testament to both his talent and work ethic.

He's also courageous: That's his big, fat, pasty butt on top of a naked Marisa Tomei in "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead", my favorite film of 2008.

He's a corporate exec in "...Devil..."; a tank-topped, closeted gay, teen go-fer in "Boogie Nights"; a twisted sex deviate in "Happiness"; rock journalist Lester Bangs in "Almost Famous"; Truman Capote in "Capote"...and believable in all of them.
