Post subject: Strauss:A Soriano contract will not get it done for Holliday

Joe Strauss is on the Fast Lane and said he has heard from several people that the Cards have not made a real deal to Matt Holliday, as opposed to the report of 6/$96 million.
Said that number won't even come close to what he gets because Holliday is the most marketable player this year.
Said an Alfonso Soriano contract will not get it done. Soriano signed for 8 yrs/$136 million

The bidding for Holliday is going to get out of control. I'd prefer to see us target Bay while the big markets are going after Holliday.

Unless Bay re signs with Boston, he's not signing anything until Holliday lays the framework.

We aren't going to get either one.
DeRosa will see alot of time in LF. Craig and Freese will make the team
Offense will be mediocre, and hopefully they put the remaining funds into the pitching staff (starter and closer)

Holliday is the better prospect. Boston will press Bay harder to resign than will the Cards. Boras is notorious for dragging out the bidding. The logical inference is that Bay signs before Holliday. I think the Cards will need to move on to option B before Holliday actually signs.

Good point. My response is then to ask: How long do we play the Holliday game? With Abreu of the market, that is one less option. Do we make a strong bid for Dye or someone else? Do we try to make a trade?

The Cards need to make their best offer ASAP and tie it to a point in time so Boras does not drag them out.
Then move on to plan B

Well than he isn't coming back I guess.
The Cardinals aren't going to be a championship caliber team next season without him, and since they don't have the elite prospects to replace him through trade we won't be seeing a deus ex machina situation playing out either. But they shouldn't be giving a really good player, superstar caliber dollars and destroying this teams payroll flexibility for seven or eight years.

Keep in mind Pujols has made it clear he is looking for the Cards to make a long term commitment to the franchise before he commits to them. If we don't sign a Holliday/Bay or a Derosa what message is that sending to him?
