The White Sox will not pick up his $12 million-dollar option, making him a free agent.

He is going to turn 36 next year, so he is not a long-term solution by any means. If we miss out on Holliday and Bay, maybe Dye? Thoughts?

He is going to turn 36 next year, so it would be a cheaper 2-3 year contract. Thoughts?

Cheaper option, solid, consistent numbers. Why not?

You would probably catch more flyballs by installing a statue. His defense is Adam Dunn terrible and he is not the hitter that Dunn is.

His zone rating was 6th among all RFers in MLB.

Is he really THAT bad?

No, he isn't that bad.

And Holliday, and I like him and would to extend him, isn't that good.

Yeah, didn't you see, they put a statue out there at the end of the season.

Many White Sox fans will argue that his defense IS that bad. Dude's gotta be a DH.

Dye murders lefthanded pitching and would be a nice short-term fix ala Johnny Damon.

Dye's last four years as measured by UZR/150: -21.5, -21.5, -21.4 and -24.5. He is a horrid defender. This past year he was second to last among all qualified outfielders in UZR/150 (Brad Hawpe was last). That means that he has cost his team an average of more than 2 wins/year on defense. Outside of his throwing arm, the fans also vote him as a below average defender:

BTW, though he did not have enough innings to be qualified, Adam Dunn was -39.5!!! He cost his team almost 4 wins on defense while only playing a little over half a season in LF.

For reference here are some of the other OF possibilities:

Holliday: +6.0
Abreu: -10.7
Bay: -11.2
Hawpe: -25.9
Marlon Byrd: -2.8
Johnny Damon: -12.1
Xavier Nady: +4.6

Dye's UZR/150 numbers are in RF. He would be an average left fielder.

He would be better in LF than Duncan was.

Totally untrue. Most of Dye's deficiency in the OF is due to his terrible range (-17.1, -17.0, -16.1, -16.5 since 2006). In most ballparks (excluding Fenway and Minute Maid) LF is pretty close to the same size as RF. Thus if he can't run them down in right he will be no better in left. He basically is Chris Duncan (UZR/150: -21.1) with a better arm.
