Things like the 40 second shifts or else you'll be punished, and mandatory naps on the plane to Sweden has worn beyond thin with me and I'd imagine with some of the players too. I see him as a short-term coach.

Have you ever flown to Europe?
Those "naps" were pretty pro-active in my view.
When I flew over, I spent my first 24 hours, feeling like I was carrying a 200lb weight on my shoulders.

i feel like we have agreed a lot about murray, but you cannot force grown men to take a nap. thats ludicrous (if true). i had not heard that before, if he did force the team to take naps, thats wrong. i'm sure a lot of them chose to take a nap, which is why im questioning the truth to this.

I posted this in another thread, but it got buried.

I think AM was hired to get the Blues through the transition of the rebuilding, but I don't think he is the coach that will lead this team to a Cup. I think JD is waiting for the right person to become available to coach this team to a Cup. Who that person is I don't know, but if JD thought there was a coach available who could better coach this team at this point, AM would not have gotten his extension this past offseason. AM will never win a cup without a full team of veterans. Even then it is very questionable, because of his conservative coaching style.

It was reported at the time. I remember reading that Walt gave Murray a hard time about it. After they got there, Walt had the entire team lay down on the ice and pretend to be asleep when Murray came out.
As I related earlier, my experience with jetlag going to Europe was rough, and I know Murray has made that trip many times, so I can completely understand his scheduling a nap session.
Ignoring the very real effects of jetlag would be something Mike Kitchen might do.

All I know, is that every single time, he is asked why he has done something - the answer always makes perfect sense to me.

He is a very well spoken person and your assessment is right on. He gives a reason for everything he does and that reason is always sensible.

We should remember it wasnt that long ago (ok, yeah it was) that we had a coach that wouldnt practice the powerplay and didnt give a reason for anything he did. So take Murray in context.

My biggest problem with Murray:

The opposition dictates the line matchups. Murray wants to match his shut down line against the other team's top line. Because of this the grinders are getting way too much ice time.

Murray plays to not lose.

The players are smart enough to know they should get some rest on a long flight... They do not need their coach/daddy telling them they have a nap schedule... These are adults (albeit some of them not old enough to drink) not grade schoolers !

If you truly think that all of them are that disciplined to do it on their own - I've got a bridge for sale.

You'd think they'd be smart enough to know not to play tricks in a golf cart while (possibly) drinking, too.

At least no one on the Blues has injured themselves while ironing a shirt they were WEARING AT THE TIME... (Edit: Just for the record, I really LIKE John Smoltz and hope he stays with the Cards)

Face it, sometimes highly paid adults need to be told not to do stupid things, too! Smile
