Craig Murray, the rector of the University of Dundee in Scotland and until 2004 the UK's ambassador to Uzbekistan, said the CIA not only relied on confessions gleaned through extreme torture, it sent terror war suspects to Uzbekistan as part of its extraordinary rendition program.

"I'm talking of people being raped with broken bottles," he said at a lecture late last month that was re-broadcast by the Real News Network. "I'm talking of people having their children tortured in front of them until they sign a confession. I'm talking of people being boiled alive. And the intelligence from these torture sessions was being received by the CIA, and was being passed on."

I hope this isn't true.

I think you know in your heart that it is. This country has engaged in some despicable tactics in name of "intelligence gathering." At what point have you become that which you despise?

What's worse is that there will be a parade of fools defending all those practices described in the article. I'm surprised they haven't commented already.

We can't talk about this. Anyone who does hates america. Maobama will dig this stuff up to cover his own failed socialist policies, that he's implementing with the implied intention of disarming the citizens of the U.S. and making himself dictator for life.

So, no big deal that Uzbekistan if they were actually doing these things. Let's just focus on the US.

But I'm very ready to here from some of our Neo-Con
cheerleaders about 'better a broken beer bottle up the vagina of someone who (after all) you don't even know than trying some other way to glean this info.

I'm more concerned about the inherent unreliability of the information than I am about "moral authority." The latter is far too relative a concept. And these allegations, if true, would not place the US on equal footing with those who we are fighting - we'd still have a long way to go.

These methods are, without question, indefensible. However, the scrutiny ought to be with Uzbekistan more than the US - which I attempted to say in my above post, which upon a second read, is almost incomprehensible. But, that is not to say we are entirely inculpable.

Of course, this is presuming the allegation is true. I am not as quick to accept these things as true, as many of you are.

I heard on the radio that there's a rape taking place in the USA every 9 seconds. That's how we treat each other.

I imagine the CIA can find some dudes who are willing to do some dastardly deeds for the right amount of money. We have a few USA based companies that perform mercenary work. They kill for hire. We're not above the fray.

I haven't had a lot of issue with waterboarding and some of the mental games played with prisoners to get information, but this is messed up and inexcusable.
