The rest of this season needs to be setting the stage for next year. If we are rebuilding.. then rebuild. Expectations should be very low. There are lots of problems to fix, lots of opportunities to change. The key going forward is if the coaching staff can be innovative and creative enough to adapt the system to the talent we have. Not trying to cram the talent into the system.

You play the game to win.

Next week, at Kansas State, you play to win. If Baylor can win at Mizzou, then Mizzou can win at K-State.

The inability of this program to make adjustments at halftime is nothing new. It's been a common theme for years, although I will agree the previous 2 years it was somewhat muted. Pinkel has been the coach at Mizzou for what, nine years now? That's long enough to know what kind of coach he is. It's something that you must either live with it or change coaches. Maybe the possibility is that this is simply as good as he can be, coaching in a major conference. He can only take them this far; and for this program to take the next step may require a more talented head coach.

What's alarming to me is that blue chippers such as Wes Kemp and Andrew Jones don't seem to be getting any better. Those were both in-state kids who definitely had big time offers from other major programs. We make a big deal about Mizzou locking down the borders and keeping the best talent in-state. Well, that's all well and good...but if that talent doesn't get better while at Mizzou, it may sour the next crop of in-state blue chippers on coming here.

Mizzou has had first-half teams before. Coach Smith was the very best one-half coach in the nation in 1998. But he couldn't recruit well enough to take us to the top. That was a shame as I genuinely liked the guy.

Pinkel has in the past been able to coach full games, but that may have been because he could run up a first half surplus and the second half didn't matter as much. The halftime adjustments this year have been particularly bad, though.

*

Where do we start from here? The same place I was hoping we'd start prior to spring scrimmages: with a new offense featuring a pro-set. Gabbert has the pro scouts salivating and he's putting up ridiculous passing numbers in losses as a sophomore. We give this guy a pro set with a legitimate running threat and we maximize our chances of winning and winning at the highest level.

Next year we'll have to prove that as we lose Baylor, OSU, and Texas, and, if I'm thinking right, add A&M, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech to our schedule.

We have the talent at QB and WR that can be developed into it, so I see little reason why we can't deploy a West Coast-style passing game. The type of passing game that turned Roger Craig into a decent running threat. When you have a QB as good as Gabbert, there is no reason to run him from the shotgun every play. It's time to make this move.

Pinkel's loyalty to his coaches is admirable, but it's become apparent he's promoted the OC and DC to their level of incompetence. If they don't show a spark of genius reminiscent of Dave Christensen in the last three regular season games, Mizzou may well lose their top 2010 commits to better coached programs and then watch out below.

What I plan on doing is rooting for Mizzou for the rest of the season and for every game of every season after that.

I am going to drink beer and watch the games that MU plays on TV. Otherwise, I am not too worried about it. As much as I like MU and CFB, it does not effect my bottom line. People are getting all worked up over some adversity. Pinkel knows that MU fans want a winner, and a BIG winner. How long was Bobby Bowden at FSU before he won a NC? People are howling like mashed cats about the last nine years. MU football was non existent when I was growing up. My dad brought a football schedule home that had Woody Widenhofer and his wagon and I asked him, "Who is that." My dad calmly replied, "This is what happens when people who know nothing about football push for a change and get exactly what they want, a guy that rode on Chuck Knoll's coat tails." And the beatings commenced. Pinkel may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the guy has helped a very subpar program win some games and get on TV. I just wish that Alexander's monster year was being put to better use.
