Assuming Holliday doesn't re-sign with St. Louis, I don't care where he goes as long as the Cardinals get a first round pick out of it. Holliday signing with the Mets would be a worst-case scenario.

It's tough to say how much a player's preference influences a player's decision. For example, I doubt A.J. Burnett "preferred" Toronto to St. Louis in the off-season before 2006. He said he was interested in St. Louis and grew up in Alabama a Cardinal fan, but money talks sometimes. I'm sure it's different for every player, but it's probably the best idea to just take this kind of info with a grain of salt.

And when Burnett was a free agent before the 2006 season, when speaking with the Chicago media he denied he was ever a Cardinal fan and proclaimed that when he was growing up in Arkansas, he and his whole family were Cubs fans because they got all of Chicago's games on cable, on WGN. Shocked

Where a pro athlete grew up and which team he was a fan of as a kid are probably the least important considerations in the subject of free agency.

I don't know if Rosenthal is right or wrong but I'd rather hear that Holliday doesn't want to go to New York rather than he does.

With the Yankees winning the World Series, the Angels may be the toughest competition in the Holliday negotiations.

Anaheim freed up 25 million by letting Guerrero and Escobar go. Escobar's 10 million will go to Abreu(done deal) and soon Lackey. Guerrero's money plus a little extra will go towards Holliday. I'd also have to imagine Chone Figgins goes with Brandon Wood finally getting a shot at 3rd base. So they should have the money and with Guerrero gone, they'll have a need for Holliday or Bay.

The Angels are shedding roughly another $6 million with Figgins becoming a free agent too.

The NY media is rabid and merciless. Can't say I blame him.

The LA and SF media are much more benign.

I'm sure Barry Bonds agrees with you.

So you think, because of one example, that the SF media is as harsh and overbearing as NY?

An exception to the rule does not negate the rule. Bonds, due to his career, brought national media attention that Holliday will not bring.

Sort of confirmed what I have believed for all along, if the Cardinals offer is close to what New Yorks is he'll sign here. But that doesn't mean he isn't going to go talk to New York in the hopes of getting the biggest deal he can.

According to Rosenthal, "some who know [Matt] Holliday say he would prefer not to play in New York."

Take it for what its worth, but I for one find rosenthal to be an unreliable source.....

Does this mean you don't believe he spoke with these people? Or would you just consider it unreliable information if Holliday indeed signed with a NY team?

It must not have made your Weekly Reader. Much of the government's "case" against Bonds was based on the investigative reporting of the SF Chronicle reporters.

Wow, what a clueless attitude you have toward it. How long have you been a regular follower of the LA and SF newpapers? How about the NY ones?

Tell us all, who was the last baseball player - hometown one - that a NY newspaper reporter investigated that directly resulted in his being investigated by the Feds? Don't bother with A-rod or Clemens or Pettite - those weren't the results of investigations - they were leaked to the press.

It means that some of the things that ken rosenthal reports do not come true or lack all of the info... What I'm trying to say is that there are better baseball inside info guys than ken rosenthal, I just have never been a fan of him and i think at times some of his info can be unreliable
