A glaring omission. I say he's sorry it fell.

Raggedy is PO'd about something that Obama did or didn't do, should have or shouldn't have done, said or didn't say, blah, blah, blah. What else is new? In the bile filled world you live in, now he's sorry that the Berlin Wall fell? Uh huh.

Anyway, the critic in the Fox story is Newt Gingrich. Surprise. And here's the story from Der Speigel from October 16, 2009, also cited in the Fox story.

Obama Cancels Plans to Attend Berlin Wall Anniversary

US President Barack Obama has shelved his plans to attend festivities marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will reportedly take his place at the Nov. 9 celebrations.

Germany is going to have to wait longer than expected for US President Barack Obama's first official visit. Citing government sources in Berlin, Reuters reported on Friday that Obama will not attend the anniversary festivities marking two decades since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event will take place on Nov. 9 -- just two days before Obama embarks on a long-planned trip to Asia on Nov. 11.

According to the German television channel n-tv, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will stand in for the president. It is considered unlikely that her husband, the former President Bill Clinton, will accompany her.

Berlin is going all out for the anniversary, with such luminaries as Kofi Annan, Mikhail Gorbachev and Lech Walesa expected to be in attendance. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is pushing hard to complete ongoing coalition negotiations soon so that her government is fully formed in time for the festivities.

Despite Obama's absence, however, Merkel will get some face time with the US president in early November. She is planning to travel to Washington and will be addressing a joint session of US Congress on Nov. 3.

Obama has not visited Berlin since taking power. He was in Germany briefly in June, when he made stops in Dresden and at the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial. It was during that trip that Merkel extended the invitation for Obama to help Germany celebrate the fall of the Wall.

Merkel's government expressed understanding with Obama's scheduling difficulties, Reuters reported. Obama's first state visit to Berlin is now expected to take place in 2010.

I'm not seeing that the German populace or Chancellor Merkel are losing much sleep over this. Just you and Newt.

Gee, mao_raggedy_andy, I think it's kind of funny how you can call President Obama arrogant out of one side of your mouth, and yet presume to speak for him out of the other.

While I wish the President would have been able to attend, it's not realistic to expect him to be in Germany right now. It would've been disrespectful for him to drop by the airport in Berlin and wave like Miss America, so this is the other option.

EDIT: I might add that it has become entirely obvious that you get ALL of your information from Fox News.

This has been known for weeks. I read about it in Der Spiegel at least three weeks ago.

You acting like this is "breaking news" or something that you must post up RIGHT NOW!?!!!11one, is telling. Laughing

EDIT 2: Meanwhile, this is a perfect example of why it'd be great to separate the "smiling for the cameras", "hosting dinners" aspect of a Head of State from the REAL work of a Head of Government.

It's times like this we really could use a do nothing Monarchy.

This is why Bush/Cheney were so perfect. Bush did the smiling part and Cheney ran the country, with a bit of Treasury looting as a side business.

Just had one, it stunk.

Yeah, Obama is too busy. He is still from passing out Halloween candy.

He wishes the Berlin Wall didn't fall. How can he celebrate something that he hates?

Castro just cut the potatoes and peas from the rationed list. Obama worships him, too.

Cuba is the garden of Eden. Or Obama thinks. Yeah, right. But that is what he thinks.

Sure, comrade, sure.

Another partisan hack! Making claims with no basis in fact!

It is another one!

The original 1957 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Kevin McCarthy is a much better film than the two sequels.

But I get it.

Sure.

Germany and it's history with the USA was "important" during the Candidate Obama World Tour. Not so much now and why should it be? Exactly what's in it for him.

This is a "Germany" thing - there was actually a meeting several months ago that was IMPORTANT because World Leaders all attended BUT Obama, he sent Jones at the very last minute. Bad form but it is what it is.

It's all a matter of priorities. I'm sure the EU, Germany, UK and the others have a very firm understanding of Obama priorities at this point.

It might bother Newt but it's unlikely to bother anyone else - certainly not the American people who mostly can't even figure out where Germany is on the map. The fall of the Berlin Wall is SOOOOOO 1980's.
