I saw a lot of the state playoffs, including the state tournament in Kansas City, and wanted to give some of my opinions. I thought St. Joe's was the favorite going in, but when I heard they changed their lineup from a 5-1 to a 6-2, I couldn't believe it. They had most of their team back from last year's State Champion team and were ranked #1 most of the year and had beaten all the tough teams in Missouri this year (Cor Jesu, Incarnate Word, etc). I wonder which coach decided to tinker with the lineup with 2 or 3 weeks to go in the season? The freshman setter will be very good in a year or two but she wasn't ready for prime time this year. This move cost them the State title. Also, I couldn't believe Incarnate Word had a dog pile after winning the 3rd place game. Have their expectations gotten that low that they thought they won State when all they did was win third?

If we use your logic, they shouldn't have even played the 3rd place game.

You don't think Incarnate had reasons to celebrate beating their conference rival? By your own admission St Joe was the favorite going in.

I would be happy with ending the season on a winning note. If I recall correctly St Joe's basketball team was relatively happy with their 3rd place finish a couple seasons ago.

The problem is you are being way too sensitive.

I don't think St. Joe was ever the favorite going in. Did you just join the forum yesterday so you could slam the coach's decisions? And I suppose a team is not allowed to celebrate a third place finish without being accused of having low expectations? Perhaps they should have stomped off the court and cried. Both St. Louis teams should be very proud that they had the opportunity to play in a State tournament. Many schools would gladly switch places. Congrats to both IWA and SJA!

St Joe was the favorite going in, at least in the St Louis area. Also, just FYI, the team ran a 6-2 last year and BOTH of those setters were back this year however the coach decided not to use the senior setter in the 6-2 this year. They were running a 5-1 most of the season but switched to a 6-2 about 4 weeks ago. Which in my opinion was the right move.

I think the unfortunate loss to St Joe which has some amazingly talented players was that the entire year was focused on one or two players instead of the whole team. Plus I believe some court leadership was missing.

congrats to them for making the trip to state. I am sure there are many teams that were back in STL this past weekend just wishing they had the opportunity to play.

Also, congrats to IWA, especially the first year coaches.

I do think that parents and other adult fans take prep sports so much more seriously than the high school students who play the game ever do. And, I think this may be a good example.

Do you think that the members of the SJA varsity squad are in class at this moment thinking about how the coach cost them a win (which is highly doubtful to begin with)?

I don't think the coach specifically cost them the win, however I do believe some of the players are in class thinking about the feeling of a 4 hour bus ride home finishing 4th and not carrying the state tournament trophy into school today.

But, they should still be proud of their accomplishments of what it took all season long to get the opportunity to at least compete for a state title.

Smile IWA's #1 rival in VB, BB, and soccer is St. Joe. Beating a #1 rival anytime is cause for a dog pile.

Hey statfreak, I have one question for you: You think St. Joe's going to a 6-2 was the right move, then explain this: They beat Incarnate Word during the regular season with a 5-1, but lose to Incarnate during the playoffs with a 6-2. Doesn't make sense to me.

Obviously you have a personal reason as to not being happy about the change from a 5-1 to a 6-2. And any team can beat another team. Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure St Joe lost to IWA and Lafayette last year but then beat Lafayette to go to State and beat IWA at state. Sometimes teams get better or the scouting is better by the end of the season.

Bottom line - St Joe is a great team and just didn't have it last weekend, but should be happy with their accomplishment. It is a tough task to win back-to-back state titles. I have no doubt they will probably be picked to win it all again next year. They have great players returning.

Smile I heard the change in formations was because one of the STJ setters was running cross country the same day and then also trying to play volleyball. Isn't that just like MSHSAA....to schedule them both on the same day!!!! Boy are they stupid!
