- Begin forcing branches of spring-flowering shrubs indoors. Two- to 3-foot-long stems of Forsythia, Quince, winter honeysuckle, Pussy willow, Deutzia and spring-flowering spireas force readily. Recut branch ends on a slant, place in decorative containers filled with water and store in a cool, sunny locale for winter bouquets in the weeks ahead.

- Review seed and nursery catalogs for plants with improved insect-, disease- and drought-resistance.

- Test viability of leftover seed. Wrap 10 seeds in a damp paper towel. Keep moist and warm. Check for germination in a week. If fewer than half sprout, order fresh seeds.
