I need to install a light fixture in the kitchen and replace one over the dining room table. The hardware on the kitchen cabinets and all interior doors seen from the overall open space have the older, antique brass hardware. Should finishes match throughout?
Fixture and hardware finishes don't have to match, but they should blend together to make a harmonious space. If I have clients with both brass and satin nickel, it's easier because fixtures/hardware exist with a combination of both finishes. With the older, antique bronze, you'll have to make a choice: Either buy all new satin nickel or keep with that finish.
Replacing the door handles is going to cost about $50-$75 each (I use Emteck for quality and price point). It's one of those details that needs to be done. Hinges need to match, too. That goes for the kitchen, too, if they show on the door.
If you have a condo where the outside door hardware can't be changed, you can often update the inside of the door hardware. Investing in this important detail will make a big difference that you'll notice immediately.
