Russ Mitchell, an STL favorite son and former national anchor for CBS News, is being honored today by Kent State University.

Mitchell, a Webster Grove native and Mizzou grad, has been the main anchor and managing editor at WKYC in Cleveland for the last 16 months.

Today, he will receive the Robert G. McGruder Award for Diversity by the university's journalism school. He also will deliver the keynote address at the ceremony.

"Joe's St. Louis" appears online Monday-Friday and in print on Saturday. Holleman's "Life Sherpa" column appears Sundays in Everyday. On Fridays, Holleman is a guest at 8:10 a.m. on FM NewsTalk 97.1 , and at 2:20 p.m. on KTRS AM-550. Follow him on Facebook and Twitter.
