Jewish New Year
Rosh Hashanah, or Jewish New Year, begins at sundown tonight. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, "head of the year." It is one of the holiest days of the year, marking the special relationship between God and man.
It also marks the beginning of the High Holy Days, or Days of Awe, in which Jews examine their spiritual lives and repent for sins against fellow humans.
The 10 days culminate with Yom Kippur, when Jews atone for their sins against God. This year, Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sept. 17.
