Picking best and worst dressed on the red carpet is my least favorite task of awards show season. So before I begin my snarky and flattering remarks let's just say everyone's pretty.
Let's start with those who arguably missed the mark.
I don't hate Elizabeth McGovern's gown, but she looks like she stepped off a Disney set and she should be singing chirpy notes while prancing around with little birds and deer. Even the hair style screams Snow White.
Then there's Sarah Michelle Gellar who told this cute little story on the red carpet about how her 2-year-old daughter picked the Monique Lhuillier dress Mommy would wear. Unfortunately, it looks like the type of dress a 2-year-old would want to wear. It looks painted in the worst possible way. The fabric resembles a wedding gown that's been in an accident at sign painting facility.
Finally, there's Elle Macpherson who is phenomenal looking, but... this dress is like a high-end saucy pirate wench costume. It's too much, the corset, the frayed edges, the billowy bottom, the fit, the volume. It's a roller coaster. If it was chopped below the knee it would be easier to take.
Among the best, I was instantly drawn to Piper Perabo. Not only did she look the most comfortable on the red carpet, she looked flawless. The volume below and sleek fit above was a complete success. And the semi-sheer front and high-neck are the perfect marriage of sexy and sophisticated. I wish the dress had a little color, but there's something really striking about the look nonetheless.
Kate Winslet deserves much credit for her lovely black and white gown, but Claire Danes' gown is my favorite with that color scheme from tonight's Golden Globes.
And lastly, Tilda Swinton looked stunning from the tip of her well-coiffed sculptural hair to the bottom of her floor-skimming baby blue hem. It's even better that the look is unexpected from a woman prone to embrace androgyny.
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Loved Zooey Deschanel in a gorgeous Prada gown with a great splash of color and in constrast, Kate Beckinsale wore a lovely, nearly colorless and strapless gown that looked like it was sculpted using a cast of her body.
No likey the matronly look from Jessica Biel. Long sleeves and lace can work, but this Renaissance Faire dress just looks drab.
And lastly, it's ironic, but Kelly Osbourne was on the pre-show fashion critics panel on E! but she looked like she was possessed by the ghost of Norma Bate's mother. The hair and the Zac Posen dress were way too severe for someone so young.
