Whenever I get promotional and marketing emails from the Andrew Christian men's underwear line, I have to think twice before opening them in the newsroom.
Or any place in public.
The men's underwear designer is fond of touting his innovative fabrics and styles (some of which include underwear that "enhances" the wearer, such as "butt-lifting," waist-cinching and ... um ... other stuff).
Christian is keen on boasting that he was the first to include "technology" in his line, but when it comes to marketing, his objectives are not so lofty.
His advertising is about all things campy and salacious, which is not different than most underwear brands. We've come a long way from the goofy guys in Fruit of the Loom costumes. Apparently, today's consumers like skin, lots of skin, and a thick dollop of innuendo.
The current Andrew Christian campaign images feature a sexy Santa and the promotional video is so racy that you have to verify that you're over the age of 18 to view it. To be honest, the ad is not that racy compared to Calvin Klein and Armani underwear ads, but it's not for primetime.
There are plenty of crotch shots (to show off the underwear, of course) and a few lingering scenes of body oil and rubbing.
The successful men's underwear brand has been launching and producing elaborate videos for weeks in anticipation of the holidays. I knew it was going to get pretty scandalous when they introduced the slutty elves.
But they are obviously doing something right. Men's underwear sales are on the rise, and you might have heard that men's underwear is one of Alan Greenspan's favorite metrics for predicting economic growth.
Greenspan's underwear theory explained.
So it appears that Andrew Christian's "Sexy Santa" (played by Jose Parra, who is definitely flaunting some enhancement) is loading his sleigh with economic stimulus.

Open with care. Christian makes no qualms about tailoring his message to everyone who's usually on Santa's naughty list.
