Sarah Phelps started an designer activewear label, Saraphia, several years ago and now she's devoted it to a humanitarian cause.
Phelps, a St. Joseph's Academy graduate who now lives in New York, launched a "fashion with compassion" campaign that begins with a "World Peace or Bust" t-shirt to raise money and awareness for the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. It's a mildly cheeky campaign considering that she's selling women's tee and the slogan is strategically placed at chest level.
But who says you can't promote a worthy cause and still be a little sassy.
Twenty-five percent of the net proceeds from selling the shirts will be donated to the UNHCR, which provides shelter, food and medical assistance to millions of refugees worldwide.
The T-shirts are $45 and available in five colors at www.worldpeaceorbust.com.
The UNHCR featured Phelps personal campaign on it's Blue Key Blog. The blog is part of a blue key campaign to encourage citizens to donate $5 and wear or carry a blue UNHCR key. The key is a reminder that more than 6,000 UNHCR staffers worldwide give refugees the protection, food, shelter and care, "opening doors to a new life."
An estimated 43 million people around the world, that's nearly the combined populations of New York and Texas, are displacement from their homes and many have been traumatized by sexual violence, torture, and aggression.
If you want to help, there's a way. For more information visit thebluekey.org.
