Inspectors from the St. Louis County Department of Health check each of the county's 1,076 public pools and spas at least once every two weeks when the pools are in operation. The inspectors check for safety equipment, make sure pumps and filters are operating correctly, and test the pH and chlorine levels for sanitation. Last year, the inspectors shut down pools nearly 800 times for various violations, mostly involving chemical imbalances. Most of the the violations were corrected and the pools were allowed to reopen within hours, according to a health department spokesman. Search by name or ZIP code for pools that were closed in 2009.
