Now's the time to start thinking about buying bulbs to plant in October. You can brighten your garden and contribute to Brightside St. Louis at the same time. Brightside St. Louis, formerly Operation Brightside, is a nonprofit group known for its city cleanup and beautification projects.

The deadline for the annual bulb sale is Sept. 23.

For this year's sale, Jason Delaney and Lynn Slackman of the Greater St. Louis Daffodil Society helped pick bulbs for Brightside's new "Midwest Mix" — six varieties that do well in the St. Louis area. In the mix, you get 30 bulbs (five each of the different varieties) for $16. You can also buy other daffodil, tulip, daylilly and crocus bulbs.

You can pick them up Oct. 7-8 at Greenhouse in Forest Park, or they can be shipped to you for a fee. Order online at or call 314-772-4646.
