When it comes to creating style, Laura Kathleen Planck is quickly becoming St. Louis' go-to woman.

The designer shared her threads with the world on the recent Season 9 of Lifetime's "Project Runway," where she made it to the final five. And her downtown loft, which she decorated herself, is a perfect example for 20-somethings who want chic décor on the cheap.

"A year ago, I decided to find a loft in the downtown area," says Planck. "I found myself downtown every day, so why not live there?" She searched for lofts where her friends resided, but the waiting lists were too long.

A two-bedroom loft, in another building, with two bathrooms opened up downtown. She grabbed it.

Planck shops on the cheap and looks for the best deals. She searches the Internet, frequents antiques stores and bargain-shops at area Goodwill locations. She buys most of her home-accent pieces in the clearance sections and shops the bargain bins at fabric stores. Some of her prized pieces, such as a nightstand, wing chair and two couches from the 1970s, are family heirlooms from grandparents and great-aunts.

Planck chooses her furniture wisely. She handpicks couches and chairs with wood trim. The wood may have chips, but a can of black lacquer paint changes the old style to a fresh, modern look.

Planck's sewing skills and eye for style lend beautifully to her home décor. She can make pillows and curtains, reupholster furniture and paint at the drop of a dime. "I'm always looking at mixing colors and prints to make a visual effect," Planck adds.
