I have a rather large covered deck that is white. Right now, I just have a grill and a table and chair set out there. I'd love to do something a bit different. Do you have any ideas?
Designing your exterior space is very similar to designing the interior of your home. You already have a grill (kitchen area) and table and chairs (the dining area). Add a conversation area or living room with an outdoor sofa, chairs, cocktail table and side tables. Define each of these three spaces by creating area rugs painted on the deck. If your talent doesn't include such a speciality, St. Louis is loaded with artists who can help.
Have fun with the painted rugs by utilizing bright colors and intriguing patterns to complement the style and color of the furniture. Just as on the interior of your home, each of these areas should flow together and give you the feeling of a well-developed design.
Add potted plants to give height to the space mimicking walls. You mentioned that the deck is covered — if semiopen, as in a trellis, add ivy for ceiling interest. Exterior accessories are a must and will finish off the design. Enjoy entertaining this summer in your new outdoor living space!
