FLORISSANT - Crews are cleaning up gasoline that leaked from a Florissant gas station into a nearby storm sewer.
The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District contacted the Missouri Department of Natural Resources this morning to report the smell of gasoline coming from a storm sewer, the DNR said. A DNR coordinator found gasoline and high levels of gas vapors in the storm sewer.
Sewer district staff tracked the gasoline to a leaking hose at the Circle K station at 1545 South New Florissant Road, the DNR said. The gas station shut down the pump and brought in a contractor to do cleanup work under DNR oversight.
Absorbent booms were placed in the sewer to capture the gasoline, the DNR said. The storm sewer has been flushed with water and ventilated to prevent future vapor build-up.
It's unclear how long the gasoline had been leaking and how much made it to the storm sewer.
