GOOD SHOTS: A dozen St. Louis ArtWorks apprentices are celebrating the opening of their photography exhibit of residents of St. Louis' Old North neighborhood in the La Mancha Coffeehouse this afternoon, to be followed by dinner with Secretary of State Robin Carnahan.
Priscilla Block, topper of ArtWorks, said the apprentices are juniors and seniors at a variety of area high schools, including Central Visual and Performing Arts, Sumner, Carnahan School of the Future, Lift for Life Academy, Vashon, Clyde C. Miller Career Academy, Gateway Academy and Roosevelt.
The students spent a semester interviewing and photographing residents of the Old North neighborhood in an effort to gets kids and older people talking about the community. They also have published a book of their photographs with some text about the project. The book, "Portraits of Old St. Louis," will be available for $20 at the gallery opening or online here in the near future.
The students and some neighborhood residents will be at the opening, beginning at 3:30 p.m. That will be followed by the dinner with Carnahan at the Old North Restoration offices on the 14th Street mall. Carnahan will talk with them about "Civic Etiquette." The teens will also get a lesson on business dining etiquette from Keith Jones, maitre d' of the Commerce Bank Executive Dining Room.
The coffeehouse is at 2815 North 14th Street.
Among the ArtWorks board members expected to be at the dinner are: Susan Glassman, former director; David Seevers of Laclede Gas; attorney Narcisa Symank; and Rachel Powers of Vector Communications.
