ZOO KNEW?: Some things you won't see in the rebuilt south parking lot of the St. Louis Zoo are parking rows with pictures of Quetzals, Uakaris, Xanthareels or Yaffles.
Don't bother looking for pictures of Quails, Urvas, Xenops or Yaks, either.
With room for only 22 rows of parking, something had to go.
"It was decided to leave out Q, U, X and Y, since there are fewer animal names and photos to coordinate with these letters," explained Christy Childs, the zoo's PR manager.
She added that construction has been completed on the east half of the lot and said the west half is due to be finished at the end of November. Each row will be identified with a letter of the alphabet and a corresponding animal photo to help visitors locate their vehicles.
While Q and X are among the least frequently used letters of the alphabet, U and Y appear far more often than Z and J. We're betting the higher profiles of such animals as Zebras and Jaguars -- compared with say, Umbrettes and Yoldrings -- helped keep their letters on the row markers.
