KLOSS CLASS: If you thought you saw supermodel Karlie Kloss at the St. Louis Area Foodbank in Bridgeton on Saturday, your eyes weren't deceiving you.
Kloss, whose image has graced just about every magazine on the planet, spent three hours at the foodbank with other volunteers helping to package more than 17,000 pounds of food for people in need.
And, to prove that this was not a publicity stunt, she did it without a phalanx of photogs, designers or make-up artists in tow.
"She borrowed our car to drive up there," her agent, Mary Clarke of Mother Model Management, said yesterday. "She said that before she got involved she wanted to spend some time there finding out about the foodbank."
Kloss, 19, grew up in Webster Groves and now lives in Tribeca but returns to St. Louis regularly to spend time with friends and family. As she travels the world for her modeling career, Kloss has become a St. Louis booster, known for such things as her Midwestern authenticity and for bringing home-baked cookies to the crews at photo shoots.
About her volunteer work, Kloss said through her publicist: "It's important to me to give back to the St. Louis community. The St. Louis Area Foodbank does so much for families and individuals in the area -- it was great to be able to help out, even in a small way."
She also had planned to spend some time at St. Louis Children's Hospital on Monday helping out with Halloween activites but a scheduling conflict forced a change in plans.
Kloss was home for the Halloween weekend, winding down from a spate of globe-trotting during the frenzied fashion season, which had her strutting catwalks in New York, Paris and Milan. Her face graced the the Sept. 10 cover of Life magazine, which featured her in a multi-page photo essay. Kloss is recognized in the industry for her strong runway walk, ability to deliver perfect poses as needed and easygoing personality.
