ROOTS MUSIC: Ten St. Louis-area high school juniors and seniors are headed to the White House on Sunday with the National Blues Museum to participate in a blues music celebration being hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama.

The group from here will be among some 120 students from public schools in L.A., New York, Philadelphia, Nashville, New Jersey, Seattle and Mississippi. The event is part of an educational program that will include museum tours and special activities in conjunction with the Grammy Museum program "At the Crossroads: A History of the Blues in America."

The program, which will be produced on Tuesday, is a complement to PBS' "In Performance at the White House" concert series.

St. Louis is lucky to be included, said Rob Endicott, chairman of the board of the not-for-profit National Blues Museum, which is still in the planning stages.

"It's an honor to send bright young representatives to the nation's capital," Endicott said in a news release. "We are excited for the St. Louis students who will be able to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience."

The students who are going are from seven public schools and were selected by school administrators based on criteria provided by the Grammy Museum. The students and their schools are: Kayla Loveless, East St. Louis Senior high; Kendra Rakers, Belleville West; Bea Dageforde, Ladue Horton Watkins; Nikko Gianino, Kirkwood; Caroline Martinez, University City; Allyson Myers, Bayless; and Jeremiah Henderson, Miguel Plancarte, Brittani Savage and Abraham Shaw from the St. Louis Public School District's McKinley Classical Leadership Academy.

The Blues Museum was invited to participate in a panel with noted blues experts, including Bob Santelli, executive director of the Grammy Museum and an advisor to the museum; Keb Mo, a Grammy Award-winning artist; and Shemekia Copeland and Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, both of whom are Grammy nominees.

The program is scheduled to be streamed live beginning Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. local time. Click here to see it.
