DOG SENSE: Shiloh, Cally and GI Joe are the Humane Society of Missouri and Purina One's "Bark in the Park" mascot finalists, and the animal rescue association is looking for public votes to put one of the dogs at the head of St. Louis' largest dog walk on May 19 in Forest Park.

The dog that wins will have something to bark about. He or she will be the 12th official mascot for the walk, will be featured on event materials and will receive a year's supply of Purina One dog food.

Each of the dogs was adopted from the Humane Society and has a heart-tugging story.

Here are the dogs and a little bit about them:

Shiloh, who was adopted by Mary Kramer, is a chocolate Lab that came to the shelter emaciated and missing most of his hair because of being chained, caged and neglected. While Shiloh was recovering, Kramer, who has Multiple Sclerosis, was dealing with the loss of the service dog she had and the death of her retired service dog. Her search for a new dog led her to Shiloh, who she says is "the perfect partner."

Cally's owner, Andrea Hartman, 11, and her family adopted the Pembroke Welsh Corgi two years ago. Cally has turned out to be a canine blood monitor for Andrea, who has diabetes and needs her blood sugar to be kept at a certain level at all times. They found out Cally could help one day when Andrea was watching TV and Cally started barking and wouldn't stop. When Andrea got up she found her blood sugar was way below the correct level.

GI Joe, a black Lab mix, was adopted by Angela Peacock in 2009. He had been donated to a rescue organization because he had reckless puppy tendencies. While GI Joe was being trained, Peacock was told she needed a service dog to help her with painful arthritis and post-traumatic stress disorder, which she had developed after serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq. GI Joe has helped ease Peacock's conditions and she is now in college.
