This weekend, we'll be keeping our eyes on the road and the hands on the wheel. Here's a look at some of the stories we'll be covering in STLtoday and the Post-Dispatch over the weekend.
Hitting the gas: Would you pay $20 for a round-trip to Columbia, Mo., on a revamped I-70? MoDOT injected a new sense of urgency into the toll road debate this week - essentially saying the rebuilt toll road should be up and running within six to eight years. In Sunday's Post-Dispatch, we talk to truckers and other critics who are warning that it will divert traffic to other highways and give private operators a means to raise tolls at their own whim.
Hitting the brakes: The Missouri Department of Transportation will get a chance to redeem itself from last week's winter road disaster. With Saturday's forecast calling for icy conditions, MoDOT postpones this weekend's closure of the eastbound highway between Jefferson Avenue and the Poplar Street Bridge.
Calling and driving: Two years after imposing a texting ban on Illinois drivers, state lawmakers are considering whether it's time for them to hang up altogether. Under newly filed legislation in Springfield, Illinois would join nine other states in banning the use of cellphones while operating a vehicle. We'll take the pulse in the Legislature in Illinois and and in Missouri, which still hasn't implemented a texting ban.
A two-man race? Mitt Romney enters the last day of campaigning in South Carolina's GOP primary contest telling voters that he's the one that Republicans can trust to "post up well" against President Barack Obama in the fall. Newt Gingrich meanwhile says that he is "tired of the elite media protecting Barack Obama by attacking the GOP." And while the Republicans are going toe-to-toe, what is the president doing? Visiting Disney World by day and singing Al Green tunes by night.
Purple Hearts: Our reports about Purple Hearts awarded to the famed World War II Tuskegee Airmen inspired a University City artist to create a series of paintings to honor the all-black unit whose service helped integrate the armed forces. You'll be able to check out his work in Sunday's Post-Dispatch.
