Here's your daily rundown of stories we're covering on STLtoday on Monday and in Tuesday's Post-Dispatch.

State of the Union: On Tuesday, Present Obama presents his State of the Union address. But many of the promises he outlined in previous addresses remain unfulfilled and House Speaker John Boehner is already previewing this year's speech as "pathetic".

Book it: Librarians announce their picks for the Newbery and Caldecott medals, and other top children's books. In our book blog, we tell you about Chesterfield author Patricia C. McKissack, who won a Coretta Scott King honor award for her 2011 picture book "Never Forgotten," illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon.

Love your workplace? Even as unemployment soars, plenty of St. Louis workers head to rewarding jobs each day. We want to talk to those workers - and recognize their employers - in an upcoming Top Workplaces special section.

A beef with prices: Beef prices have peaked in recent months and are expected to shoot up by at least 5 percent in the next year. In Tuesday's Post-Dispatch we'll explain how the biggest reason for the increase is demand from overseas -- which, luckily for American meat producers, has compensated for the growing numbers of Americans swearing off red protein.

Bob Rose is deputy managing editor at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
