In a few weeks, that airline ticket you see advertised for $59 might not sound as good at $78.50, or some higher price.

But that's what will happen when a new Transportation Department rule kicks in that will make airlines include taxes and mandatory fees in the advertised price.

The airlines, of course, don't like it. They say it will look like a big fare increase, when the fares aren't going up at all. As the Associated Press reports:

"David Berg, the general counsel of Airlines for America, a trade group of the biggest carriers, said the change will depress travel.

"It's basic economics," he said. "History tells us (that consumers) will see higher prices and buy less."

Southwest, Spirit Airlines and Allegiant Air are fighting the government in court, hoping to roll back the rule, but a decision in that case isn't expected until after the rule takes effect."

Personally? I don't think most consumers are so dumb that an advertised fare for $59 or $79 or $99 means they believe that's what it will cost. When I book air travel online -- which is pretty much the only way I do it -- I see all the taxes and fees before I hit the "buy" button.

The airlines argue that other industries don't have to include taxes in their advertised prices; why should they?

Do they have a point? Is it unfair to make airlines include the taxes and security fees and landing fees in the prices? Or is it the best way to let people know the actual cost of something?

And really, do you think it will change whether people fly? Would it change it for you or your family?
