Will you drive less if gas hits $4 a gallon, and stays there?

We all saw gas prices spike last week by about 20 or 25 cents a gallon in the St. Louis area.

Last year, gas sold for an average of more than $3.50 a gallon, the priciest ever. And a report in Time magazine says there is no relief in sight for 2012.

A year ago at this time, the average gallon of gas sold for about $3.10 a gallon. Right now, AAA says the average is about $3.32 a gallon. Price fluctuations usually see gas get higher as spring and summer get closer, which is why predictions are for $4 a gallon gasoline by spring or summer.

Gas is not something that most people can do without. But most people can get by with less -- by cutting out trips, using mass transit, swapping a gas-guzzling vehicle for something more economical.

If gas hits $4 a gallon or higher -- and stays there -- will you change your driving habits? And what steps are you likely to take to cut your fuel bill? Mass transit, carpooling, just not driving? Or getting rid of that SUV for something more fuel-efficient?
