UPDATED at 9:15 a.m. with charges against one of the cousins.
FERGUSON • A St. Louis County man was charged late Monday in a shooting outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Ferguson.
Arthur D. Jordan, 49, of the 1800 block of Kilmory Drive, was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He was jailed in lieu of a $50,000 cash bail.
A business meeting between Jordan and his cousin at a Cracker Barrel on New Halls Ferry Road near Interstate 270 turned violent Monday morning when the men began arguing over money related to their business and Jordan fired several shots from a gun.
The cousins were inside the restaurant shortly after 11 a.m. when they started arguing, said Tom Jackson, the Ferguson police chief. They went outside, where Jordan pulled a gun and fired eight to 10 shots, at least two into the ground.
No one was struck, but the man who was shot at ran off. Jordan was taken into custody at the scene, and the second man later turned himself in at a St. Louis County police station.
The men ran an adult day care business together, Jackson said. The other man is the owner of the business, and Jordan believed he was owed money.
Jackson said he did not know the name of the business. He withheld the identity of Jordan's cousin because he is not being charged in the incident.
People inside the restaurant, on New Halls Ferry Road near Interstate 270, ducked under tables or ran into the kitchen Monday as the shots were fired.
Three people from the restaurant, including one woman with high blood pressure, were taken to area hospitals for evaluation, Jackson said.
A Cracker Barrel spokeswoman said the company was "very glad that no one was hurt."
The Kinloch Ladies Group was holding its monthly gathering of about 35 people inside when the argument broke out.
Virginia Turner Thompson, 69, of Black Jack, said she had just ordered eggs and sausage when she heard shots.
"Everybody fell under the tables and ran into the kitchen," she said.
The ladies group has been meeting at the restaurant every month, but Turner Thompson said she was not sure the group would return.
Felicia McCoy, 44, of Florissant, said she was joining her mother for breakfast when she saw one of the men run past the front window after the gunshots were fired.
"We all just hit the floor," she said. "People were running everywhere, everywhere."
After the gunfire, people sat on the front porch in rocking chairs, writing down statements for police.
