ST. LOUIS > Man admits selling stolen wire — A man who sold 900 pounds of stolen copper pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal charge in U.S. District Court of interstate transportation of stolen property. John F. Martin, 51, of Granite City, admitted stealing AT&T telephone wiring in Bridgeton and taking it to Illinois for sale. Martin emphasized that others cut down the wire, according to his public defender, Tom Flynn. The replacement value of the wiring is between $30,000 and $70,000, Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Albus said. Under federal guidelines, Martin could face at least a year in prison when sentenced July 29 and will have to pay restitution to AT&T.
ST. CHARLES > Driver runs into firetruck — A motorist suffered two broken legs and other injuries when his car hit the back of a St. Charles firetruck stopped in the right lane of Interstate 70 under the First Capitol Drive overpass on an emergency call about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. David Andrzejewski, 42, of O'Fallon, Mo., was trapped for about 20 minutes. No firefighters were hurt. The extrication was delayed because the impact crushed the part of the truck carrying rescue tools, leaving the crew to use a saw to get to them. The firetruck and an ambulance were there, with warning lights flashing, to treat an asthma patient who stopped along the highway. Andrzejewski was reported to be in serious condition at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating.
