CLAYTON • A third teen has been charged in the Dec. 18 shooting of Maryland Heights police Sgt. Joe Eagan.
Eagan, who was shot in the face last month while sitting in an unmarked car, was targeted in an attempted carjacking, court records allege.
Marquise D. Lockhart, 17, of the 4900 block of Thekla Avenue, was charged Sunday with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, first-degree attempted robbery and two counts of armed criminal action. He is being held on $250,000 bond.
Lockhart's older brother, Evan Lockhart, 19, was charged Saturday with the same crimes. The older Lockhart is being held without bond. A third suspect, 16, is being held by juvenile authorities. He is not related to the Lockharts.
According to court records, Marquise Lockhart was the alleged lookout. Evan Lockhart shot Eagan "knowing he was a police officer," according to a probable cause statement, which adds the "defendant was trying to take Det. Sgt. Eagan's vehicle."
Eagan was shot in the face at about 2:30 a.m. Dec. 18 while sitting in the unmarked vehicle on Jennings Station Road near Interstate 70 in Jennings. Police said a man walked up to the vehicle, opened fire and fled on foot.
Eagan, a 25-year veteran of the Maryland Heights department, lost five teeth. His jaw was shattered.
Eagan is out of the hospital but faces more reconstructive surgery. He remains on leave from the police department.
