CLAYTON • A St. Louis man has been charged in the Dec. 18 shooting of a Maryland Heights officer, authorities said Saturday.

Evan Lockhart, 19, of the 4900 block of Thekla Avenue, was charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, first-degree attempted armed robbery and two counts of armed criminal action.

St. Louis police said Lockhart was arrested early Friday morning for a peace disturbance. He was later charged by city police officials with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action in connection with a carjacking that occurred late the evening of Dec. 17, and held on $1 million bond. St. Louis County prosecuting attorney Bob McCulloch said at a press conference that information was eventually discovered linking Lockhart to the Maryland Heights shooting.

Maryland Heights police Sgt. Joe Eagan was shot in the face while sitting in an unmarked vehicle on Jennings Station Road near Interstate 70 in Jennings.  Police said a man walked up to the vehicle, opened fire and fled on foot. Eagan, a 25-year veteran of the Maryland Heights department, is out of the hospital but faces more reconstructive surgery.

McCulloch said the shooting was unrelated to Eagan's investigation.

Lockhart is being held in the St. Louis County Jail without bond. McCulloch said the investigation is continuing.
