LAKE SAINT LOUIS > Teen drowns in lake • Cole Schlogl, 17, drowned early Monday while boating in the "big lake" here with six friends, Police Chief Mike Force said. Schlogl, of Florissant, disappeared after jumping in for a last-minute swim about 50 feet from shore as the group returned to the dock at Woodlands Marina. Rescuers were summoned about 12:52 a.m. and found the body about three hours later. Force said foul play was not suspected. The Missouri Water Patrol charged one person aboard with boating while intoxicated, but officials do not believe that had any bearing on the death. Schlogl was described as an accomplished athlete when he was a student at Trinity High School in Spanish Lake.

ST. LOUIS > Woman robs bank • A woman robbed the Commerce Bank at 3134 South Grand Boulevard about 11:30 a.m. Monday, handing a teller a note demanding money, police said. The robber indicated she had a gun but did not show a weapon. No one was injured. She left with cash. The suspect is described as a black woman in her early 40s, 5-foot-5 and weighing about 180 pounds. She has medium-length curly hair. She was wearing prescription glasses, a full-length denim dress, white tennis shoes and a plain white baseball cap and carried a large tote bag.

HAZELWOOD > Suspect charged in bank holdup • James E. Phinney, 34, of Maryland Heights, was charged Monday with second-degree robbery in connection with the holdup Friday afternoon of the Bank of America branch at 7601 North Lindbergh Boulevard. Phinney is accused of walking into the bank, handing a note to a teller and leaving with cash. He is being held at the St. Louis County jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond.

ST. LOUIS > Feds say worker stole over $140,000 • Randy Gross, 37, who was general manager of Allied Roofing & Exteriors in Fenton, stole more than $140,000 from his employer, federal prosecutors here said Monday. Gross, of St. Louis County, is accused of keeping some payments for work in which the company provided supplies and labor. He is charged with two counts of mail fraud.

ST. LOUIS > Author sues publisher • A St. Charles-based author of poker books filed a federal lawsuit here against his publisher and agent Monday, claiming they failed to pay him more than $1 million worth of royalties. The author, Ken Warren, alleges that his agent, Avery Cardoza, and Cardoza Publishing failed to hand over royalties of 6 percent of the retail price of hardback books, 7.5 percent of the price of paperbacks and 50 percent on overseas sales. Cardoza told a reporter that Warren was paid all he was owed and called the suit frivolous and stupid.Cardoza's website calls Warren "one of the best-selling hold'em authors ever." Warren has won multiple tournaments since he learned to play hold'em in Las Vegas and "has supported himself almost exclusively through his poker earnings since then," the website says.

HIGHLAND > Company admits tax crime • Chevron Commercial Inc. of Highland pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges of conspiracy to impede and defeat the functions of the Internal Revenue Service in determining and collecting federal excise tax, prosecutors said. The company was then sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to assist the IRS in computing the proper tax owed and to pay the appropriate amount, prosecutors said. They said Chevron dodged excise taxes by using multiple transactions and doctored invoices involving additions made to truck chassis.

MILLSTADT > Suspect is charged in theft of ammonia • Authorities here say a two-month search for a suspect in the theft of a chemical used to make methamphetamine ended when he returned to the business to steal again. Michael Fisher, 30, of Owensville, Mo., was charged Saturday with two counts of unlawful procurement of anhydrous ammonia. He's jailed on $150,000 bond. Investigators since May had been trying to identify the suspect captured on surveillance video trying to steal the fertilizer from the Handy Fertilizer Co. in Millstadt. Authorities say they arrested Fisher last week when he targeted the business again.
