WELLSTON > Student shot near Normandy High • A 10th-grade student was shot in the leg across the street from Normandy High on Wednesday, shortly after school let out. The student, who was taken by ambulance to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, was part of a crowd of about a dozen students who had gathered to watch a fight, Wellston Police Chief G. Thomas Walker said. The fight happened near the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Lucas and Hunt Road, where someone fired a shot into the group that had gathered, he said.

Police took two men into custody near the shooting. They were being questioned and had not been charged. Those taken into custody were not Normandy students, Normandy School District officials said in a written statement. No further information was available from district officials.

CHESTERFIELD > Juvenile held in sex case • A juvenile was held Wednesday as Chesterfield police investigated a report of a sexual assault on another juvenile between 10 and 11 p.m. Friday along the 2600 block of Kehrs Mill Road. "We believe alcohol was involved," said police Lt. Steve Lewis. "They were not strangers to each other. This was not a random act of violence."

ST. LOUIS > Judge dismisses suit over Aug. 3 election • A circuit court judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by state Rep. Hope Whitehead over her Democratic primary loss on Aug. 3, finding that Whitehead's timing was off. Whitehead, whose district covers parts of northwest St. Louis, lost the election to Karla May by a slim margin — 1,386 to 1,353. Whitehead filed suit, alleging the St. Louis Democratic Central Committee improperly gave May and others the role of "challenger" in the election, allowing them to scrutinize voters' credentials. Candidates must file suit in the five days after the official announcement of the results of the primary election, according to St. Louis Circuit Court Judge Kelly Parker's ruling. Whitehead filed her suit too early, a day before official announcement of the results on Aug. 24.
