ST. LOUIS • Two Massachusetts men were sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to prison terms for stealing credit cards from the lockers of local health clubs.
Jonathan Vendituoli, 55, of Swansea, Mass., and Kevin Cooney, 54, of Belmont, Mass., face terms of 84 and 60 months, respectively, for stealing and fraud, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
Vendituoli and Cooney traveled to St. Louis on several occasions in 2010 and this year to break into lockers at local health clubs and steal credit cards. After stealing the cards, they purchased electronics, expensive cameras and computer equipment, often from Best Buy stores around the St. Louis area. The pair were apprehended at a local health club in February.
Both pleaded guilty in April to credit card fraud and conspiracy to commit credit card fraud. Vendituoli also was ordered to pay about $88,000 in restitution. Cooney was ordered to pay almost $50,000 in restitution.
The U.S. attorney's office did not specify which health clubs the men targeted, but the cases were investigated by the Clayton police department, with the help of the St. Louis and Town & Country police and the U.S. Secret Service.
