MARYLAND HEIGHTS • Two St. Louis County men were charged today in an incident late Thursday night at Dave & Busters here that injured a police sergeant.
The Maryland Heights sergeant, 39, was injured when a pickup backed into him as he tried to prevent two men and two women from leaving the restaurant's parking lot, police said. The uniformed officer was working security in his off hours for the restaurant and arcade when he approached four people who had been denied entry shortly before 11 p.m., said Police Chief Tom O'Connor.
The four appeared to be under the influence of drugs when they arrived at Dave & Busters, the chief said.
As the officer followed the four to their pickup in the parking lot, Wilson elbowed the officer, then tossed keys to the other man before getting in, police said. The driver then backed into the officer, injuring him.
When the four got into a pickup, the officer dived into the truck's flatbed but was thrown out as it sped away, O'Connor said. The pickup took off, and after a chase on Interstate 70 by other officers, the vehicle was stopped near Lucas and Hunt Road and West Florissant Avenue. There, two men were taken into custody.
Today, prosecutors charged Dorwin A. Overall, 21, of the 1400 block of Attica Drive in Bellefontaine Neighbors, with felony counts of assaulting a police officer and armed criminal action. Police said Overall was driving when the officer was injured. He was jailed in St. Louis County in lieu of a $75,000 cash bail.
Another man Derrick Wilson, 21, of the 9500 block of Culebra in Ferguson, was charged with felony counts of resisting arrest and property damage and a misdemeanor count of assaulting a police officer. He was being held in lieu of a $30,000 cash bail.
The four were under the legal drinking age and appeared to be under the influence of drugs when they arrived at Dave & Busters, the chief said.
Maryland Heights Capt. Joe Delia said that after striking the officer, Overall moved into a passenger seat and Wilson got behind the wheel. Wilson then fled the parking lot, he said.
Wilson dropped off two women along I-70 before crashing the vehicle through a fence and onto property that is part of the Emerson Electric complex. Police said the two women will not be charged.
Overall and the other man were arrested after a foot chase, police say.
The officer who was hurt initially declined medical treatment but later received hospital treatment for a twisted ankle and bruising. He was released Friday morning.
Delia said the injured officer is a sergeant has served the department for 16 years.
Overall and Wilson were involved in a similar encounter with police about 12:30 p.m. Aug. 8 in north St. Louis County, police said. Overall was driving a 2006 Dodge Charger when two St. Louis County officers stopped the car in the 10300 block of Galloway Drive.
The officers got out of their patrol car, and Overall rammed it during the traffic stop, police said. The officers got out of the way and were not hurt. Overall and Wilson, a backseat passenger, were arrested but only Overall was charged in that incident.
Delia said the suspects are "a threat to law enforcement and society and they need to be locked up."
"These are 20-year-old kids," Delia said. "They're going to kill a police officer or someone else."
