TOWN AND COUNTRY • A man from the Ballwin area who allegedly abandoned his wrecked vehicle and disappeared moments after a deadly collision in Town and Country has been charged with a felony connected with the crash.

George F. Putney, 52, was charged Monday in St. Louis County with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident. Bail was set at $15,000. He is being held at the St. Louis County jail.

Police say Putney was driving west on Clayton Road about 7:40 p.m. Thursday when he crossed the double yellow line and collided with a Volvo driven by Ciby Kimbrough at Woods Hill Drive. Kimbrough, 70, was fatally injured in the crash.

Putney kept going, but his car stalled several hunderd yards away and he fled, leaving the car behind, police say.

Putney's vehicle, a gray GMC Envoy, was found west of the crash site, said Lt. Bob Arthur of the Town and Country police.

Police started looking for Putney and were in contact with his family members on Friday to try to convince him to talk with investigators, Arthur said. They told reporters Friday that Putney was a "person of interest" in the crash and they couldn't say for sure that he was the driver.

Records show that Putney was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter on Sunday. However, leaving the scene was the charge filed Monday. No one from County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch's office could be reached for comment.

Under Missouri law, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident is a misdemeanor unless someone was injured in the crash, property damage cost more than $1,000 or this was the defendant's second offense.  In this case, it's a Class D felony, punishable by up to four years in prison.

Police are asking for the public's help in creating a timeline of Putney's whereabouts before the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call Town and Country Police Detective Sgt. Rick Kranz at 314-568-1453. Police say they need more information before they can seek more serious charges against Putney.

Investigators specifically want to hear from anyone who knows what Putney was doing in the hours leading up to the crash, from about 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Kimbrough lived in the 11700 block of Russet Meadow Drive in St. Louis County.

Kimbrough had a doctorate in psychology, specializing in early childhood development. Her survivors include her husband, Charles; two sons, Carlos and Choron; and seven grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Layne Renaissance Chapel, 7302 West Florissant Avenue. A memorial service will be at noon Saturday at Lutheran Church of Atonement, 1285 North New Florissant Road.
