ST. LOUIS • A clerk at a privately run Department of Revenue office in St. Louis took at least 37 bribes to process false or fraudulent paperwork, an indictment handed down Thursday claims.
Alice H. Gregory's duties at the license office at 4628 South Kingshighway Boulevard included processing new vehicle registrations and titles as well as registration renewals, the indictment says. She had to verify that customers had insurance, safety and emissions certificates and personal property tax receipts.
But in what the indictment claims is at least 37 transactions, Gregory submitted false or fraudulent registrations, titles or renewals to the state in exchange for bribes.
The indictment does not explain the motivation for those who allegedly paid the bribes.
Gregory worked at the office from December to Feb. 15, the indictment says.
A call to the office was not immediately returned. Gregory could not be reached for comment and no lawyer is listed for her in court files.
Four men and women were indicted earlier this month and accused of providing Missouri IDs to undocumented immigrants.
