EDWARDSVILLE • A school bus driver who became ill as she was driving a bus on Friday died Tuesday at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn said.

Pamela M. Crump, 60, of the 6900 block of Marine Road in Edwardsville, suffered chest pains and shortness of breath while driving students to Edwardsville High School. She pulled over near the intersection of Myrtle and St. Louis streets in Edwardsville and called the bus dispatcher for help. Students on the bus comforted Crump, called 911 and helped relay her condition to the bus dispatcher.

Paramedics arrived and began treating Crump, but she went into cardiac arrest at the scene. Revived at the hospital's emergency room, she remained in critical care until her death at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Crump was employed by bus services provider First Student Inc. Nonn said his office was conducting a routine investigation because Crump was stricken while on the job, but said he had no reason to suspect her death was caused by anything other than heart problems.
