HAZELWOOD • Police here say a woman was drunk and distracted by a phone call when her 9-month-old son drowned Monday in a hotel bathtub.

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged Brooke Maynard, 24, with second-degree murder. Police said she left her son, Roman Bell, alone in a bathtub with the faucet on about 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Extended Stay America Hotel at 6065 Lindbergh Boulevard. Police said she had been living at the hotel for the past three months after moving from Florida.

Police said Maynard told officers she had intended to bathe the baby and left him alone in the bathtub briefly to use the phone. After realizing what she had done, she came back to the bathroom to find her son not breathing.

When officers arrived, they found Maynard on the floor giving the baby CPR, police said.

Officers and paramedics arrived and attempted to revive the boy. Efforts to save him continued at DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities say the boy drowned.

Interim Police Chief Gregg Hall said Maynard was intoxicated and may also have also been using other drugs. He said blood tests will show what other substances may have been in her system.

Court documents say Maynard is charged with second-degree murder (also called felony murder) because her son died while she was committing another felony — endangering the welfare of a child — by leaving him alone in a bathtub of water.

She was jailed Tuesday in lieu of $250,000 cash bail.
