FARMINGTON • An alleged bail jumper facing charges in four separate arrests by Farmington police was killed early in the day in an exchange of shots here that wounded a deputy sheriff.
Callion Hamblin, 32, lived in Farmington, officials said. St. Francois County sheriff's Deputy Don Smith was treated at Parkland Hospital for a minor leg wound and released.
Farmington Police Chief Rick Baker said it was unclear whose shot killed Hamblin, because Farmington officers, sheriff's deputies and some bail bond agents all opened fire. St. Francois County Coroner Jim Coplin said an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning and results should be known by noon.
The Missouri Highway Patrol was asked to investigate the shooting.
It began just after midnight when bail bondsmen from two companies went looking for Hamblin, who had been sought for about three weeks after skipping a court date, Baker said.
It was not immediately clear which court date Hamblin skipped, but he was facing a range of charges including assault on a law enforcement officer, drug possession, assault and tampering with physical evidence from four arrests in Farmington between 2009 and 2011.
After probation was revoked from a 2003 drug arrest, he was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2007, according to court records. He was also sentenced to seven years in prison for a 2005 assault arrest. But it was not clear how much time in prison he ever served.
The bondsmen went to Hamblin's apartment on Old Fredericktown Road and called police when he barricaded himself inside with a gun.
Three Farmington officers rushed to the scene.
One of the officers saw the man run from his apartment and a shot was fired.
Baker said police suspect it was the fugitive who fired; no one was hit. Officers pursued the man but lost track of him near Highway H.
About 90 minutes later, police obtained information from AT&T that the fugitive was detected in the area of East Karsch Boulevard and Washington Street, also known as Highway 32.
A few deputies, two state troopers and three Farmington officers confronted the man about 1:30 a.m. near Karsch Boulevard, on property owned by USA Drug Express.
"He was ordered several times to drop the gun," Baker said. "He pointed the handgun at a deputy and was running toward the deputy."
Police said that's when the man and the officers exchanged gunfire.
Baker said he was not sure how many shots were fired.
Police did not identify the bail bonding companies involved.
